Wow, this past Sunday was a big one. As usual, a trusty loyal band of dedicated volunteers arrived to make this delicious and healthy meal come together beautifully. And it certainly was gorgeous when it came together. The sandwich was half tuna salad and half chicken salad. There was a delicious corn, bean and veggie salad, and another side of very sweet and cool watermelon. There was also a delicious dessert of Jo's famous cookies and some pudding. We also had fresh lemonade and ice tea prepared for distribution. Luckily, there was a bit of the watermelon left over at the end, so I can attest with certainty that the watermelon tasted as good as it looks in this photo above! It's no surprise that I am a big fan of the veggies and fruits that are always served with meals at these Sunday meals. Look at how colorful this salad looks. There were three different shades of bell peppers in here, beans, celery, onions, green onions and corn. The perfect dish for summer. Like I mentioned in my last post, sometimes it's nice to have a delicious sandwich for dinner instead of a heavy hot meal during the summer. This past Sunday was a celebration of Pentecost, and I think it really suited the energy and spirit aflame that day. In a time, when there is so much sorrow, pain and anger in the air over the murder of George Floyd, it was really nice to come in and do something to bring some light into this world.

Sometimes during the summer people would be happy with a delicious sandwich with healthy sides for dinner instead of a heavy hot dish. This dinner was another wonderful wholesome dinner that our loyal volunteers packed and dispersed last Sunday. The sandwich was accompanied by a gorgeous fresh salad (below) and watermelon and of course chips and a cookie for dessert. The crew puts a lot of time into planning meals out ahead of time. At this meal we had volunteers with a table with hygiene kits as well, which is very helpful during this trying time of COVID-19 where many of the restrooms which are usually opened to the public, are no longer available. We really could not do this each week without all of the donors who dedicate their time, their food, their talent and items to bring this together each week. Thank you to all of you for helping and contributing to make this happen! I'm a big fan of pickles and Cole slaw! And although this was not the main attraction of this meal tonight, I thought the vibrant colors of the dill pickles right beside the crispy fresh Cole slaw would show how much heart was put into this home cooking, Actually, the potato salad looks amazing too! Yesterday, the guests ate hot pulled pork sandwiches with delicious sides of a pickle, Cole slaw, potato salad and dipping sauce, all of course with a dessert treat on the side. Certainly, the dinner could have been better by sitting down in community together with others, but during this time of COVID-19, getting warm healthy meals in take out boxes handed out with a smile is the next best thing. Our volunteers go out of their way to prepare hygiene kits for the guests too. The picture below shows the table set up for giving out personal hygiene amenities to the people who came to the church yesterday. It was another successful dinner made through the efforts of our wonderful volunteers!
We had a wonderful turn out yet again at the church this past Sunday. The food was as healthy as ever. Our volunteers always ohhh and ahhh me with the great recipes they come up with every week. Yesterday was chicken pesto penne pasta, a small dinner salad, mixed vegetables with broccoli, carrots and cauliflower, a dinner roll, an amazing dessert called Fluff (made with whipped cream, jello, vegan marshmallows made with fresh blueberries, raspberries and pineapples) with a homemade snickerdoodle on the side and of course Jo Ann's famous cookies (this week chocolate cookies). This was all, not to mention, all the other goodies in a hygiene kit complete with toothpaste, a razor, toothbrush and lotion. If you happen to stumble upon any trial size products that can help the homeless, we would be happy to add them to the hygiene kits that are dispersed every Sunday! Thank you to our devoted team who show up each Sunday to make this happen. We love your cooking and your generosity to the community! Here is one of our wonderful chefs who comes each and every Sunday to make delicious food for our guests =) May 3rd wasn't exactly Cinco de Mayo, but it was close enough to merit the food theme around Mexican food. Yum! Enchiladas, rice, beans, tortilla chips and of course something sweet for desert. Jo makes some of the best cookies in town, so we are always happy to receive her tasty treats on Sundays! Thank you to all the chefs, volunteers, goodie bag makers and guests, who make these special dinners possible!
We were so lucky to have received a great home recipe of beef broccoli for this past Sunday. It was so wonderful to have so much healthy broccoli in this meal! It was an especially hot day this day, so we had plenty of beverages at this meal: fresh made iced tea which was especially popular, lemonade and of course the coffee, water and vitamin water. The sanitary packets came with tooth paste, a tooth brush and other amenities. We were so happy to receive donations of masks to also hand out. The wonderful volunteers went out on April 19, 2020 to serve an amazing Italian dinner for the guests. Each dinner came with spaghetti and meatballs with a sausage, salad, soup, dinner roll, cookies and also a hygiene kit for people to take home with them. They really loved this - it was delicious. Thank you to our local businesses in Temple City for giving us a great price for this take away meal.
This past Sunday, April 12, 2020, was a really special dinner. During the Corona Virus, helping the homeless is so important, since life for those without stable living has changed and the homeless continue to be one of the most needy in our society. Our Sunday dinners have not stopped during this difficult time. It is certainly different, but making sure that people have a warm meal is imperative to our group. We didn't get to sit down together at tables and have pleasant chats around the dinner table, but we did make to-go meals with a little Happy Easter surprise. We also were able to exchange encouraging words and share a smile as our packets were handed out to our gracious visitors. Each one of our guests received a healthy meal and a special Easter bag with candy and a roll of toilet paper (which is a prized win in today's COVID-19 day). Below, is one of our plates that were made with loving care and were provided to families and individuals. Everybody received a healthy serving of ham, mashed potatoes, green beans, dinner roll and butter, and one cookie for dessert.
